Years ago when Ron Boutin and Linda Boyer traveled to Kingston, Ontario, for a company golf tournament, they loved the area so much, they decided they would make it their retirement destination.

A decade ago, they retired from jobs in the aerospace industry and since then, have moved to a few locations in that general area, always on a lake.

Currently, these water-lovers own a lakeside home 40 km north of Kingston in Verona on Thirty Island Lake. Feeling isolated, they are making a change again. They have purchased a 1,320 square-foot, two-bedroom plus flex space condominium at Stone & South on the River, CaraCo Development Corporation’s community of exclusive dockside residences on the St. Lawrence.

“It’s very remote where we are right now,” Linda says. “We’re on a private road, and there are other people who live here year round, but we don’t see anyone other than a few neighbours. No one will deliver pizza out here,” she laughs. “Our parents are deceased, our kids are grown and gone, and we’re looking forward to doing more for ourselves at this stage in our lives.”

Ron added, “We had been discussing downsizing and how we still wanted to live on the water, when I saw an ad for Stone & South, we thought how nice it would be. The condominium component means we can turn the key in the lock and travel without worry.”

“It’s the perfect scenario for us,” Linda says, “We have friends in Gananoque, which offers small town living close to big cities when we want the urban bustle. Our son lives in Montreal, and our daughter is in Toronto, so it’s a great mid-point. Where we live right now, if we want to see a movie or theatre, it’s an hour’s drive each way. At Stone & South, the Thousand Islands Playhouse is next door. We plan to attend shows a lot, and we’ll be able to walk.”

They decided on the Beaurivage corner residence because having windows on two sides appealed to them. “Plus, it has a large, 174 square-foot balcony,” Linda says. “We look forward to sitting outside sipping wine and enjoying the view.” She also points out that the layout is ideal, with the two bedrooms located at either end of the residence. “Even if we have guests, we’ll have privacy. In addition, our suite is at the end of a hallway, so we’ll have neighbours on only one side.”

“Our decision was based mainly location and the fact that we’ll live on water. We own a boat now, but likely won’t bring it with us. Linda and I can walk two blocks to a marina and rent one when we get the urge. We like to golf, and there is a small course nearby. We also realized there’s curling in town, and we might take that up. It’s going to be a fun lifestyle.”

Prices for CaraCo’s urban rustic residences with spectacular views begin at $488,900. Prices include one underground parking spot and a storage locker.
