Peterborough Couple Sailing into a New Thousand Islands Lifestyle
As a ‘full-time’ sailor in the early-mid 80s, Andy Roy’s passion continues as his pastime. He’s been a competitive sailor all his life, having won three silver medals at the Laser Masters’ Worlds (2014 France, 2015 Kingston, 2017 Croatia), and a silver in the 1982 Open Laser Worlds in Italy. The Peterborough resident won a silver medal at the 1983 Pan Am Games and has also raced for Canada in the America’s Cup, Admiral’s Cup and Canada’s Cup.
In 2018, he and his wife Danielle purchased a new condominium residence at Stone & South in Gananoque, ON and they can’t wait to enjoy living in CaraCo Development Corporation’s exclusive dockside residences on the St. Lawrence River.
“I’ve been coming to sail in Gananoque and Kingston for years, as the area offers some of the best fresh-water sailing in the world, with excellent wind and wave conditions, so I’ve always wanted to live in the area”, remarked Andy.
Andy owns a Laser dinghy, one of the most popular and competitive boats in the world for men’s and women’s Olympic competition, youth sailing, and in the Masters category. “This amazing little boat was a Canadian invention in the 1970s, and is one of the largest classes of sailboats in the world. The Men’s Open and Masters’ Worlds were held in the area a few years ago and the CORK sailing centre in Kingston regularly hosts major championships. So this part of the world really feels like home.”
He and Danielle were looking to buy a home in Kingston, but couldn’t find anything suitable. Andy said, “A friend told us about Stone & South, and when we checked it out we liked it right off the bat. It’s still in the Kingston Area, and we’ll live right on the water. For us this is ideal.”
Andy works in the naval defence industry for a Mississauga, ON based company, but works primarily from his home in Peterborough and also travels internationally for the business. Retirement from full time work will coincide with their move to Gananoque, although Andy indicated he may do a little consulting after the move. Danielle is retired from a career in the dental field.
He and Danielle purchased a two-bedroom Stone & South “Howe Island Suite” that features a wraparound south facing balcony. They plan to sell their Peterborough residence once the building is completed in the spring of 2020.
“Danielle had some misgivings about going from a large house to a condo, but as we begin our plans to downsize we think it will work out really well. . We also have a two-bedroom condo in the Dominican Republic, so it will be fun to have the same kind of waterfront, vacation-like accommodations in Canada. We’ll love the convenience of locking the door and leaving without any worries,” Andy added.
The Roys are also excited about living next door to the Thousand Islands Playhouse and close to numerous other amenities.
“We looked at possibly finding a condo in Kingston, but there didn’t seem to be much new happening, and certainly nothing right on the water. At Stone & South, a golf course, brew pub and great restaurants are all nearby. We will definitely be leading a more active, outdoors lifestyle – biking, walking, kayaking, sailing, and boating through the 1000 Islands. Our golden retriever, Cooper, will love it too. Our sons Ken and Grant both live in Ottawa and really like our plan to move. We’ll be much closer to them and I’m sure they’ll enjoy everything Gananoque has to offer when they visit.
As far as their purchase experience, Danielle and Andy have been impressed with the Stone & South website and frequent articles, photos, and updates on social media. “Everything written supported our decision to make this move”, said Danielle, “and, our interaction with the Stone & South professional sales team has proved to be smooth sailing.”
For the few remaining suites, prices begin from $489,900. Stop by the Discovery Centre at 5 King Street East in Gananoque, call 613-876-2524 or visit www.stoneandsouthcondos.ca.
