Joan and Gary Gulliver enjoy riding their bicycles around south Whitby, ON, and on the waterfront trail, where they have lived for 36 years. Gary participated in his 8th Ride to Conquer Cancer® benefiting Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto, which raised an impressive $18.3 million. Joan is his fundraiser and cheering section leader. Little did they know their other recent travels would open the door to a new biking adventure for the future.

Recently, the couple stopped in Gananoque to spend some time before driving on to Kingston. Three things happened. They saw the signs for Stone & South on the River, CaraCo Development Corporation’s community of exclusive dockside residences on the St. Lawrence, went into the Discovery Centre to look around, and purchased a condominium suite on the spot. “It was love at first sight,” Joan Gulliver says. “The floorplans and renderings are attractive and just what we’ve been looking for. As we age, our Whitby property is more difficult to maintain, so condo living is appealing. Years ago, I had family visiting from England, and we took them on a boat trip to the Thousand Islands and we all loved the beautiful area and experience. From our condo, we’ll be able to easily and conveniently bike along the pathways and around the town.” Gary Gulliver adds that, “Gananoque is one of those places in Ontario where you have to visit at least once. I have fond childhood memories of that area. Plus, Gananoque’s a great-sounding name for a town. We love Main Street and Stone Street with their quaint historic houses and stores. In the Greater Toronto Area, the city has spread out beyond Whitby. We’ll be happy to move away from the sprawl.”

Both Gary and Joan are retired. Joan was a school teacher and principal in Durham Region; Gary sold real estate.
He knows a great homeownership opportunity when he sees it. The couple purchased the 913 square-foot, two-bedroom Heart Island Suite I, which has a spacious balcony. “I am an avid gardener,” Joan says, “so I look forward to growing plants in containers on that outdoor space. Plus, the Stone & South waterfront views will be beautiful. Our Whitby home is on the lake, so we enjoy water views as part of our daily lives.”

Gary adds, “We’re snowbirds, so with the condominium set-up, we’ll be able to go south in the winter and not worry about exterior maintenance. That’s a nice luxury.” He and Joan also appreciate the amenities that will be included.

They can entertain in the social room, and with a smile, Gary says he’ll enjoy walking past the fitness centre! “In addition to our bicycles, Gary also likes to kayak.” Joan says, and “Stone & South will have storage for both.”

The waterfront condo will sit next to the Thousand Islands Playhouse and that is another benefit for the Gullivers.

“We’ve already attended a couple of performances there,” Joan says, “and when we have visitors, it will be fun to take them to the theatre.” She adds that later on the day they purchased, they met up with friends in Kingston and stunned everyone by saying nonchalantly, “By the way, we just bought a condo in Gananoque.”

Gary sums it up with, “The quality of the location struck us immediately. In the end, that’s why we bought a suite. We had thought about buying a condo at some time down the road. Well, we did it …Stone & South is down the road!”

Suite prices begin from $488,900. For more information on Stone & South on the River, stop by the Discovery Centre at 5 King St. E. in Gananoque or call 613-876-2524.
