For Don and Susan Hobb, living near water is a given.

The former north of Toronto cottage owners currently live in Scarborough near Lake Ontario – and plan to carry on that tradition in Gananoque.

The Hobbs purchased a new condo suite (Amherst Island) at Stone & South on the River, CaraCo Development Corporation’s community of exclusive dockside residences on the St. Lawrence. “We read about the development, wanted to learn more and so we took a nice road trip with one of our three daughters. We checked the area, saw the Playhouse Theatre right next door, walked around the town and enjoyed a nice lunch. A couple days later, we bought.”

Don has travelled to Gananoque in the past on business, and is familiar with the town. “Although I was frequently working in the area, I hadn’t really looked at Gananoque as a place to live. When we checked out this waterfront condo, I was really impressed with the beauty of the Thousand Islands and convenience of the building’s location to mostly everything we’ll need.”

He and Susan will soon retire from their family-owned company and look forward to moving to a quieter, but active, lifestyle.

Said Sue, “Don and I are avid golfers. There is a course 10 minutes down the road and several others in the area. We also love fishing, and we hear Gananoque is great for that.” In fact, the adjacent waters offer a variety of sport fishing, and Gan was voted Ontario’s Ultimate Fishing Town in 2013. “After we move in and get settled, there may be a boat in our future!”

The Hobbs purchased a suite that measures in at approximately 1,200 square feet with an incredible wraparound view of the Thousand Islands. They will move from their four-bedroom low-rise home “but downsizing”, Sue says, “is not an issue for us. Years ago, we lived in a similar size home, and I know we can adapt and do this transition. Most important for us is that our daughters who live in Toronto condos are looking forward to taking the train to Gananoque, to spend leisure time with us.”

The size of the building is also attractive, according to Don. “We like the fact that Stone & South is an intimate condominium and not a massive high-rise. We’re tired of big city traffic. From Gananoque, if we need a big city, we can be in Kingston in minutes. Plus, we’ll be able to simply lock the door behind us when we travel. We frequently visit family in the US and regularly vacation on Hilton Head Island. All of that lifestyle ease, and the ability to walk to local amenities make this small and friendly town an ideal spot for us. And, we will also have the exclusive use of a social room and fitness centre right in the building.”

The Hobbs are also delighted with the care and attention they received from the Stone & South staff. “They answered all our questions during the sales process,” Sue added, “and when we wanted a couple of walls moved, they were very accommodating. With an off-leash dog park nearby, we know that our dog and two cats will fit right in at Stone & South.”

There is still time to own at this remarkable community. Suites start from $498,900. For more information, stop by the Discovery Centre at 5 King Street East in Gananoque, call 613-876-2524 or visit
