Sittin’ on the Dock

Life in Gananoque is very much like the Otis Redding song, which is exactly the vibe CaraCo Development wants to cash in on with their new riverside condo project.

When conversations veer into speculations about both the current state and future of the Canadian housing industry (arguably one of the top two or three topics discussed in typical Canadian social circles), red hot markets like Toronto and Vancouver tend to dominate. And given the rollercoaster nature of variables such as the volatility in pricing and availability, this is no surprise: it’s the conversational equivalent of a horse race.

The Eastern Ontario town of Gananoque offers prime waterfront views, and the suites at The CaraCo Group of Companies’ Stone & South condominium project will offer some of the best.

The original plans for Stone & South featured 89 units in two six-storey, concrete buildings. But, the Kingston, Ont.-based company realized a change was required when none of the units without water views were sold — despite a lower price.

Gananoque native ‘movin’ on up’ to Stone & South on the River for her new home

Diane Kirkby was just a few months old when she experienced her first river cruise in the Thousand Islands.

A lifelong resident of the Gananoque area of the Thousand Islands, she “cannot imagine living anywhere else.” Recently, Kirkby purchased a condominium suite at Stone & South on the River, CaraCo Development Corp.’s community of exclusive dockside residences on the St. Lawrence River. The choice for this condo on the waterfront was a natural for her.

Cover Story: Stone & South On the River in Gananoque

Like the Thousand Islands that surround it, Gananoque is a destination. The islands – actually more than 1,800 of them in the St. Lawrence River, straddling the border of Canada and the U.S. – have been summer playgrounds for well-heeled “islanders” for generations.

Editor’s Notes | Boats, Boots, Bikes, and a Waterfront

Waterfront properties are hot right now, not just in Toronto, but everywhere in Ontario.

A great walkable, livable waterfront attracts young families as these days, they want to work, live, and play in the same place; and it can also get those buying a home or condo to be more active as the recreational opportunities are greater.

Dockside Condo Living Is The New Cottaging In Gananoque

Many Ontarians remember going to the Thousand Islands and Gananoque when they were young, but more often than not, they do not remember the finite details of their trips. Or at least I didn’t. But, over the years, this area has changed into a lovely and livable community of about 5,200 people. When invited on a recent journalists’ trip, I was curious to learn how it has changed.

Thousand Islands View at Stone & South in Gananoque

I should have been to Gananoque before now. It’s one of those Ontario towns I’ve always had on my list of places to get to know, with its Thousand Islands cruises always having been the pull for me. With just that faint bit of awareness on my part, it’s no surprise that what I found when I did get to spend some time in what locals call “Gan” recently was that there’s so much more to this attractive, impressive little town.

Typically, high-rise developments are designed with a main hallway down the middle and units on either side, effectively creating two views – and not always of equal quality.
